Spine Rehabilitation and Conditioning

Course relevance

The level of back pain is increasing and it is now thought to be as common as headaches (Twomey & Taylor).

The most common form of back pain is low grade back pain and the latest way of managing it is by using the ‘Biomechanical Model’.  It is far more successful than the conventional medical model and it can be used by any healthcare professional in a very safe way, yet highly effectively.

The concept is quite simply to manage the biomechanical causes of the back pain by prescribing exercises rather than clinically treat the symptoms, and the concept is becoming widely accepted as the long term management of choice.

Because this is not a clinical programme Fitness Instructors are ideally placed to run these programmes and so offer a highly valuable adjunct to the work already being carried out in this profession.

Moreover with the increase in need for GP referrals by health clubs there is a value in providing these programmes for the 80% of the population who suffer from back pain at some point in their lives.  This then opens the doors of the health clubs beyond the usual 12% of the population that they usually attract.

Endorsements

The first course is endorsed for continuing professional development for qualified fitness instructors.

The content of the course is linked / mapped to parts of the level 3 Instructing Physical Activity and Exercise National Occupational Standards and may be used as supporting evidence if an instructor is working towards an NVQ.

This course provides the framework and basis of the other parts of the series and the individual courses that we provide.

REPS accreditation will follow for the other courses.  The introductory 1-day course has been accredited with 8 CPD points; the 2-day course has been allocated 16 CPD points.

Who should attend?

Personal trainers, fitness instructors, sports therapists, strength and conditioning coaches, complimentary therapists, P.E. teachers, aerobics teachers and other studio based exercise tutors.

Course details

There are 3 x 1-day courses in the series, taking the participant through from basic to advanced levels, each course is run approximately 2 months apart to allow the participant to integrate the first level into their work, before moving on to the next level.

Course content

The courses will increase your knowledge of correct exercise techniques, new exercises, new exercise concepts, how the body works in biomechanical terms and what goes wrong and ideas on how to fix it.

Rehabilitation and conditioning concepts and techniques will also be discussed about the spine and an exercise model will be presented as to how to progress exercisers through 3 phases: from   Normalisation Training to ‘Stabilisation Training’ and then ‘Fuctionalisation Training’.

These progressions start in the first course by showing the Trainer how to make the client biomechanically sound by ensuring their fundamental pelvic and spinal mechanics are ‘normalised’ and so provide the building blocks for normal movement.  In this first phase they are shown how to eradicate any muscle imbalances and nerve mobility issues as well as how to deal with any sub-clinical muscle tension.

Once this has been completed the client is then progressed to the next stage which gives them the ability to consolidate and learn new motor programming strategies in the ‘Stabilisation’ phase.  Here they are progressed through a series of isolated stability exercises and then work towards more functional stability patterns.

The final phase is where they learn to use their new motor programming strategies in a more functional way and then progress onto functional velocity training.  Here they work towards the functional patterns and velocities that are relevant their ‘purpose’.
